INFLAMMATORY DISEASES

Inflammatory eye diseases are a group of conditions characterized by inflammation of the eye’s various structures. These conditions can affect various parts of the eye and can occur in response to infection, allergies, autoimmune disorders, irritation or injury. Here is an overview of some of the inflammatory eye diseases we treat.

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

What is Conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis (AKA “pink eye”) is an inflammation of the tissue covering the front surface of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by infections, allergens, or irritants.

How is Conjunctivitis Treated?

There are a few different types of conjunctivitis: bacterial, viral, allergic, and irritant. Treatment for these issues may include eye drops or artificial tears to soothe the eye and clear the condition.

Episcleritis/Scleritis

What is Episcleritis/Scleritis?

Episcleritis and scleritis are inflammations of the white outer layer of the eye. Scleritis is typically more severe and can be associated with systemic autoimmune diseases.

How are Episcleritis/Scleritis Treated?

Treatment for episcleritis/scleritis varies and may include artificial tears, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), topical corticosteroids, or immunosuppressive drugs.

Uveitis/Iritis

What is Uveitis/Iritis?

Uveitis is the inflammation of the uvea (including the iris, ciliary body and choroid), while iritis is the inflammation specifically of the iris. Uveitis can have various causes, including infection, autoimmune diseases or injury/trauma.

How is Uveitis/Iritis Treated?

Treatment for uveitis/iritis depends on the underlying cause and severity and may include eye drops, medication, antibiotics or antivirals.
